Jonh Cage

Monday, April 30, 2007

What a pearl...
"At the time, Cage was teaching Experimental Composition at New York City's New School. Eight years beyond 4:33, he was (as our smoking MC informs us) the most controversial figure in the musical world at that time. His first performance on national television was originally scored to include five radios, but a union dispute on the CBS set prevented any of the radios from being plugged in to the wall. Cage gleefully smacks and tosses the radios instead of turning them on and off.

While treating Cage as something of a freak, the show also treats him fairly reverentially, cancelling the regular game show format to allow Cage the chance to perform his entire piece. "

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Today ive dedicated my time to video bending.
Ive found karl kompt web site months ago and ive decided that some day i will post something about this amazing resource.
In is website you will find bending schematics, links, pictures and a huge collection of all kind of video mixers.

"Karl Klomp, media-artist - vj - theater technician ('79 - NL). His research focus on live audiovisual expressions and interfacing. With a fasination for glitch-art, visual glitch, video interruption or hyperkinetic audio visuals, he deals with video circuit bending, frame grabbing, mircoprocessing, hardware interfacing, max/assambly programming. Together with Tom Verbruggen (Toktek) they played their live av performance mnk_toktek across the country. Bookings via AllesLos agency. Also doing audio/video circuit bending workshop, often in collabaration with Gijs Gieskes via AllesLos. Vj-ing since 2001 for Lo Mechanik [electronica collective/label]. In 2005 he collaborated with dePonk collective, international holding company of artists."

Low Tech Sensors

Friday, April 13, 2007

Low Tech was a collaborative research project to develop a suite of low-tech sensors and actuators that might be useful for artists and architects working with interactive environments. With this project we hoped to consolidate a number of different approaches we had found ourselves taking in our own work and develop both a "kit-of-parts" and a more conceptual framework for producing such works.

We were certainly not alone in hacking technology to suit our purposes and we realised that it would be very useful for others in our fields to have a good outline of this approach and indication of the types of devices they might use.

Now that the report has been released publicly and we have had many downloads (almost 25,000 at last count!) and several workshops, we are providing this wiki so that others can share, contribute and learn from similar projects by anyone else who would like to contribute.

Dance Backpack

We have developed a backpack, that turns the dance of the person wearing it into music, a biofeedback instrument. We have tested and documented on 20 people from the streets of Vienna and Budapest. Something that today is more and more defined by remote stations, is generated by the physical movement of your own body.

Living Interface

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

The topic of the project works between interactiondesign and the biology. It concerns the communication between animal and the machine. The animal represents the user of a system and has the possibility to intervene. The User of the System are the so-called „Daphnien“. These organisms are placed under a microscope and form an interface in the system cycle. Thus they have access to all processes in the computer and are able to manipulate them. The animal communicates with the computer and the borders between technology and the animal world blurs.

Bent 2007

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Well the bent festival is in its fourth year ...congratulations for all the people involved in this (i wish living in the us).
Here it goes the L.A installation begins these week so hurry up.
"The Bent Festival is a three day event celebrating the art of modifying existing circuits (and creating new ones!) for the purpose of creating music, art, and mischief. There are performances from musicians who incorporate these circuits into their live act, art installations made from these circuits, and workshops showing you how to do it yourself. The festival is all about reappropriating existing technologies - hacking apart old toys, building new ones from old parts - to create something fun and new and STRANGE.

This year we are expanding the festival to three cities across the US and have more artists and performers from around the globe participating than ever before. So come out and say hello. "

Graphite Record sequencer

Sunday, April 08, 2007

Well seems that getlofi as posted this already, but caleb as posted more videos in is blog, im very impressed y the graphite record and im planing to do a piece of mine using the same design as caleb (i hope you don't mind).
Here is the videos and a brief description of the graphite record.
"Here are four rough clips of the Graphite Record Player in action. My friend Robin rocked out the first 3 disks that are showcased. I am using a simple 555 oscillator kit that I got online. The pitch is being changed by the amount of graphite connecting the inside and outside rings; more graphite lines makes a lower pitch. It looks like there are multiple connection points on the arm, but I'm only using the inside and outside points to brush the surface of the disks."

transacoustic

Saturday, April 07, 2007

the institute for transacoustic research (german: institut für transakustische forschung, iftaf) was founded in 1998 to define and research transacoustics (german: transakustik). a crucial characteristic of transacoustic research is its interdisciplinary approach; it carries out science by means of art and art by means of science; methods and settings from both areas are combined to arrive at unique lines of connection and division.

transacoustic research is concerned with the peripheral effects and tangential areas of acoustics, with their borders to other areas of research. these contours and definitional borders are necessarily blurred and vague.

the question of the essence of transacoustics/transakustik is as impossible to answer as the question of art or philosophy's essence. the success, productivity and efficiency of transacoustic research do not depend on finding an answer to this question.

transacoustics/transakustik as such, does not exist; there is only transacoustic research, which constantly circles its imaginary core and thereby arrives at the most diverse results and realizations.

Connecting a Joystick to MaxMSP/Jitter

Max is all about making connections. The Making Connections series of tutorials will introduce you to new connections you can make between MaxMSP and the outside world. This tutorial, the first in the series, will discuss the use of HID devices such as USB game controllers as gestural interfaces for your Max patches.
